The Buttonwood Inn on Mt. Surprise is a charming country inn bed and breakfast located in North Conway, New Hampshire. We are renowned for our exceptional innkeeping services, offering the best in hospitality, attention to detail, and overall quality.Nestled on over five acres of serene fields and forests, just two miles from North Conway village, our inn provides a tranquil and rural environment while still being conveniently close to everything you may need.
Housed in a beautifully preserved farmhouse from the 1820s, our inn exudes a comfortable country atmosphere with its wide pine floors, antique furnishings, cozy quilts, and tasteful stenciling.

Indulge in a soothing afternoon tea accompanied by homemade treats in front of one of our traditional wood-burning fireplaces in either our spacious living room or the inviting Mt. Surprise Room during cooler days. If you prefer the outdoors, you can unwind in our Adirondack chairs, basking in the sun or finding shade, or enjoy a refreshing swim in our heated pool. For the ultimate relaxation, soak in our open-air hot tub, where you can admire the breathtaking views of the mountains and forest by day or the starry night sky.
We are more than happy to assist you with dinner plans, as there are numerous area restaurants offering a wide range of cuisine options, from local favorites to international flavors, all within a casual or elegant dining atmosphere.

Directions
Starting from North Conway Village, turn east onto Kearsarge Street at the traffic light on Rt. 16. Drive for 1.5 miles until you reach a stop sign. Go straight across the intersection onto Mt. Surprise Road. Continue up Mt. Surprise Road, bearing left, until you reach the Inn.
If you are coming from Boston, take I-95 North to Portsmouth, NH. Then, take Spaulding Tpk. North until it ends. From there, take Rt. 16 to North Conway. Alternatively, you can take Rt. 93N to Exit 23 (Rt 104E), then continue on Rt. 25E to Rt. 16N, which will also take you to North Conway.
You can also use the new North-South Road, which connects Kearsarge Street with Route 302, to bypass the Shopping District. Follow the above directions from North Conway Village or use the new road.
If you are using MapQuest, make sure to enter the address 64 Mt. Surprise Road, Bartlett, NH 03838.
The GPS coordinates for the location are 4404 38.39N, 71 07 10.07W, with an elevation of 700.
For travelers coming from New York City, take NY thruway North (Major Deegan) to Rt. 287 East. Then, take 684 North to I-84 East. Continue on I-90 (MA Tpk.) East until you reach Rt. 290 North (Exit 10). Take 290 North to I-495, then I-95. Finally, follow the directions from Boston.
From Portland, Maine, travel west on Route 302 until you reach North Conway. Then, follow the directions to bypass the Shopping District or the directions from North Conway Village.
If you are traveling from Montreal, head east to Sherbrooke, then go south on I-91. From there, follow the directions below.
For travelers coming from the Northwest, take I-91 South to St. Johnsbury, VT. Then, take I-93 South to Littleton, NH. Continue on Rt. 302 East through Crawford Notch. Route 302 will merge with Rt. 16 from the North in Glen. Keep traveling south on Route 302/16. After approximately 3.3 miles, you will see a highway sign for "The Buttonwood Inn - Hurricane Mt. Road". Take the SECOND left, .3 miles. (Ignore the entrance to Rt. 16A, Intervale Loop, even though it may seem like the right way to turn!) Turn left onto Hurricane Mt. Road. Drive for 1.2 miles, then turn left onto Mt. Surprise Road. You will see a black highway sign for The Buttonwood Inn pointing left. Bear to the left. The road will become dirt. You will see our sign straight ahead and our driveway just to the right of the sign.
If you are on I-93 in Lincoln, NH, in the summer (May to mid-November), take the Kancamagus Highway (Rt. 112) for approximately 24 miles. Then, turn left onto Bear Notch Road (Note: This road is closed in the winter!). Follow Bear Notch Rd. until you reach a blinking light in the center of Bartlett. Turn right at the light onto Rt. 302 East. From there, follow the directions above from Glen. This route offers great scenery and avoids North Conway traffic. In the winter, take the Kancamagus Highway (Rt. 112) to the end in Conway at the intersection of Rt. 16. Then, follow the directions below to bypass North Conway's shopping district.
If you are coming from the South and want to bypass the Shopping District, take Rt. 16 and at the first set of traffic lights in Conway, turn left onto Washington St. After 1/2 mile, bear left at the fork onto West Side Rd. Continue on this road until it ends at a stop sign, then turn right onto River Road. When you reach the stop lights, continue straight through. At the stop sign in front of John Fuller school, turn right. At the next stop sign, turn left onto Mechanic Street. Finally, at the following stop sign, turn left onto Kearsarge Street. Now, follow the directions above from North Conway Village.
For travelers arriving by air, the approximate travel times are as follows:
- Portland, ME: 1.5 hours
- Manchester, NH: 2.5 hours
- Boston, MA: 3 hours
